Why Is Suspension Backordered Everywhere?

June 27, 2021

Just when you thought the stars were aligning again and everything was getting back to normal...Ah, jokes on you. Well, jokes on us too.

The current state of the automotive industry and global supply chains has yet again caused major delays not only for wheels and tires but also suspension products too now. And the future doesn’t look very promising either.

Here’s everything you need to know about why suspension kits are back-ordered everywhere right now and why it’s not going to get better for a while.

Why Is Suspension Backordered Everywhere?

The entire aftermarket suspension industry has been starting to feel the effects of major delays in raw material orders due to disruptions in global supply chains. The biggest factors that’s playing into these disruptions are the global trade and travel restrictions as a result of COVID-19.

Similar to many wheel and tire manufactures, aftermarket suspension-focused manufacturers use a JIT inventory system, otherwise known as “just-In-time”.

This inventory system uses raw material orders to create its production schedules. So, when their raw materials are severely delayed due to COVID-19 chaos, this pushes back their production schedules and thus their finished product inventory.

All this to say that they can’t manufacture their aftermarket lift kits, leveling kits, coilover, or lowering springs because they don’t have everything they need. And since most companies outsource their materials overseas, this is where brands are hurting the most.

For the suspension brands that house everything in America, this won’t affect them as much.

Regardless, these major suspension backorders are causing longer lead times for innocent bystanders like you.

As much as we’d like to tell you that this won’t last much longer, we can’t. Simply put, this is the new reality for at least a few years. One day, the stars will align again and life will start to feel more normal, outside of suspension orders of course, but until then, this is it.

What Suspension Brands Are Affected The Most?

Unfortunately, this suspension backorder crisis is affecting all major suspension brands.

That includes companies such as Rough Country, Superlift, Readylift, ProRyde, BC Racing, Tein, Eibach, and more.

What Does This Mean For You?

So, what does all of this mean for you? Well, you’re going to need some patience when ordering any and all suspension components from SD Wheel or any other distributor of aftermarket suspension products. The lead time for suspension products is about 4+ weeks right now.

Before you start thinking of other ways to get your suspension sooner, this issue is occurring industry-wide so there’s no escaping it.

The good news is that nothing lasts forever. So, eventually, all these kinks in the global supply chain will untangle and the world will figure everything out. Suspension flows will go back to normal in the coming years, but don’t be surprised to have long lead times for suspension for the rest of 2021, at the very least.
