Understanding Wheel and Tire Packages

February 13, 2020

With all different offsets, widths, and diameters, buying a set of wheels and tires can be confusing. Here at SD Wheel, our goal is to make buying the right wheel tire package easy. To start things off, we're gonna kick it back to Geometry class and talk about diameter.

1. Diameter

This is the overall size of the wheels if you measure from one side of the rim to the other. Going up in wheel diameter will generally decrease the amount of sidewall you have on your tires and most times, give a worse ride but offers better aesthetics.

2. Width

The width of the wheel is fairly straightforward, it is simply the distance from the outside edge of the wheel to the inside. Wider wheels give a more aggressive appearance and offer more traction but are usually more expensive and can also increase wear on suspension components.

3. Offset

Offset is the measurement from the mounting face to the center point of the wheel. Let's start off easy. Zero offset wheels are where the mounting face is the center point of the wheel. Positive offset is when the mounting face of the wheel is out beyond the center of the wheel and closer to the outside edge. Negative offset is the complete opposite. The mounting face of the wheel will be inside of the centerline.

4. Bolt Patterns/Hub Bore

Bolt patterns and hub bore is usually manufacturer specific. At SD Wheel, we calculate this for you when you enter the car or truck that you're shopping for.

5. Tire sizes

Tire sizes are given in a specific order, such as 265/40 R22. The first number is the width of the tire. The second number is an aspect ratio that is relative to the width. To calculate this for a 265/40 tire, you take the aspect ratio of 40 or 0.4 and multiply it by 265. So the sidewall height would be 106 millimeters, or 4.17 inches. The diameter of the tire is the easiest to understand. You simply match that to the diameter of your wheels.

In Conclusion

Knowing this can help you find the right size of wheel and tires for your car or truck. Luckily, we make buying wheels and tires easy. Just head on over to www.sdwheel.com and enter your year, make and model to browse wheel and tire packages to fit your ride.
